Before the Q-series, Energy Recovery Inc.’s PX-180, PX-220, PX-260 and PX-300 pressure exchangers were the standard energy recovery devices specified on SWRO plants worldwide — the model number reflecting nominal flow capacity in US GPM. Large numbers of these devices remain in daily service across Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Oman, the Maldives, India and Africa, in plants commissioned throughout the 2000s and 2010s. The core technology is identical to the modern Q-series: a single sintered alumina ceramic rotor transferring reject brine pressure directly to the feed stream.
The challenge for operators of legacy PX plants is parts continuity. ERI’s commercial focus is on the current Q-series, and local stocking of legacy PX components outside North America is minimal. The model designation is on the device nameplate on the housing. If the nameplate is illegible, the plant commissioning documentation or original P&ID will state the ERD model, or send the housing dimensions and a photograph and we will identify the series.
