Energy Recovery PX® Q300 Spare Parts — Dubai and Spain Supply to SWRO Plants Worldwide

The Energy Recovery Inc. (ERI) PX® Q300 Pressure Exchanger is the world’s most widely deployed energy recovery device for SWRO desalination, with over 25,000 units in field operation. Introduced in 2011, the PX Q300 uses a single moving part — a sintered alumina ceramic rotor — to transfer high-pressure reject brine energy directly to low-pressure feed seawater, recovering up to 60% of the energy otherwise wasted and achieving device efficiency of up to 99%. The device operates at up to 1,200 psi (82 bar) and has demonstrated a 30-year design life in ERI fatigue testing, with a 0% return rate for design or manufacturing defects across 14 years of field operation.

A degraded or failed PX Q300 forces the high-pressure pump to compensate without energy recovery, causing immediate energy cost spikes and potential membrane operating pressure instability. For a 2,000 m³/d SWRO plant, a full bank of failed PX Q300 units can add tens of thousands of dollars per month in additional energy costs. Meliora maintains an active ERI supply relationship and sources PX Q300 and PX Q400 repair kits and components for SWRO plant operators across Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Maldives, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa.

The Morocco Opportunity — Active Procurement Now

In August 2024, Energy Recovery Inc. publicly announced $27.5 million in PX® Pressure Exchanger supply contracts for Morocco — all expected to be fulfilled in 2024. Morocco currently operates 17 desalination plants, with 4 under construction and 9 more planned by 2030, targeting 1.7 billion m³/year of desalinated water capacity. EPC contractors ACCIONA Agua (Spanish, building the Casablanca Sidi Rahal plant) and Veolia (Rabat Atlantic coast plant, 822,000 m³/day) are active in Morocco. Plants being commissioned in 2025 and 2026 will enter their first scheduled PX Q300 maintenance window in 2028 to 2030. The window to establish a vendor relationship with these plant operators is now, before the maintenance cycle begins.

Algeria’s $5.4 billion desalination programme includes 6 new plants under construction (Tlemcen, Chlef, Mostaganem, Jijel, Skikda and Tizi Ouzou), with Sonatrach signing construction contracts in January 2026. Each plant will require PX Q-series energy recovery devices and ongoing maintenance kits. Our Spain hub provides airfreight to Casablanca and Algiers in 3 to 5 business days DDP — faster than any California-origin shipment and with EUR.1 preferential tariff certificates under the EU-Morocco and EU-Algeria Association Agreements.

Active Client Supply — GCC and Saudi Arabia

Meliora is actively supplying PX Q300 kits and components to clients in the GCC. Damak International (UAE) has an active requirement for 65 PX Q300 units currently under end-user evaluation. Advanced Generation Co. (Saudi Arabia) was quoted 30 units at $348.65/unit EXW California, with DHL benchmarked at $714.44 to Riyadh. These are live transactions that confirm our ERI supply capability and active regional demand.

PX Q300 vs PX Q400 — Which Does Your Plant Use?

The PX Q300 remains the most widely installed ERD model globally, but ERI now promotes the PX Q400 as its current flagship for new-build SWRO projects. Plants commissioned before approximately 2023 almost certainly use PX Q300 banks. Plants being commissioned in 2024–2026 in Morocco, Algeria and GCC may specify PX Q400 depending on the EPC contractor’s design. When submitting an RFQ, provide the unit model from the ERD nameplate — or your plant commissioning date if the nameplate is not accessible and we will advise on the likely model.

Why Contamination is the Only Real Failure Mode

ERI’s analysis of all 164 PX Q300 units returned over 14 years found zero instances of material or manufacturing defects. Every returned unit had suffered contamination — most typically hard debris in the feed water entering the device and damaging the ceramic rotor. The design integrity of the PX Q300 is effectively perfect. This confirms two things for plant operators: first, pre-treatment quality is the critical operational variable; second, when a PX Q300 is returned for service after a contamination event, a repair kit will restore full performance provided the ceramic rotor has not been mechanically damaged beyond reconditioning. Meliora can advise on the appropriate repair scope based on the failure description before you place an order.

Stocking Strategy for Plant Operators

For plants running 10 or more PX Q300 units, maintaining one complete repair kit per 10 units as on-site insurance stock is standard practice. The kits are compact and have a long shelf life. For plant operators in Morocco and Algeria where the nearest ERI stocking point is California, a 3 to 6 month lead time risk exists if you order only when the unit fails. Pre-positioning stock from our Spain hub — 3 to 5 business days DDP to North Africa — eliminates that risk entirely. We provide bulk pricing for multi-kit orders.
