In short: The Energy Recovery PX-180 is a legacy 65 Series pressure exchanger rated for 100 to 180 gpm (22.7 to 40.8 m³/h) with a minimum guaranteed efficiency of 96.7%. Complete units and spare parts are still supplied by Energy Recovery. Meliora sources them against the part number and serial number on the device nameplate.

The PX-180 shares its design with two larger devices. All three use the same principle: a ceramic rotor spins inside a ceramic sleeve between two end covers, and transfers pressure from the reject brine directly to incoming seawater.
| Model | Flow range | Minimum guaranteed efficiency |
|---|---|---|
| PX-180 | 22.7–40.8 m³/h (100–180 gpm) | 96.7% |
| PX-220 | 31.7–49.9 m³/h (140–220 gpm) | 96.8% |
| PX-260 | 40.8–59 m³/h (180–260 gpm) | 96.8% |
Parts for the two larger models are covered on the PX-220 and PX-260 page.
This is the most common problem with these devices. The three 65 Series models look alike from the outside, and Energy Recovery’s older data sheets cover more than one model on the same page, so a plant holding the data sheet often cannot tell which device it has. Ordering the wrong one is an expensive mistake, because the flow ranges differ.
The nameplate settles it. Each device carries an Energy Recovery part number and a serial number. Send a photo of the nameplate and we ask Energy Recovery to confirm the model against that serial number before anything is quoted.
Energy Recovery states that PX devices contain no wear parts and need no routine maintenance. In practice, parts are ordered after an event: debris reaching the rotor, operation outside the flow limits, damage during handling, or seals disturbed when a device is opened. If a device is running but performing badly, the cause is often in the operating conditions and not in the device. See the PX troubleshooting guide before ordering parts.
There are two routes when a PX-180 has to be replaced.
Like for like. A new PX-180 fits the existing rack, pipework and control settings. Energy Recovery builds these units to order, so the lead time is the manufacturer’s production time plus freight. We state the current lead time on the quotation.
A current model. Energy Recovery’s present range is the PX Q Series, which includes the PX Q180. Whether a Q Series device can go into a rack built for 65 Series devices is an engineering question about connections, dimensions and flows. We put that question to Energy Recovery with your serial number and plant data, and pass on their answer.
If the plant has several devices in parallel, say how many are installed and how many have failed. A rack can sometimes keep running at reduced flow on the remaining devices while a replacement is built, but only within the flow limits of each device.

The PX-180 is rated for 22.7 to 40.8 cubic metres per hour, which is 100 to 180 US gallons per minute. Energy Recovery gives a minimum guaranteed efficiency of 96.7% at 36.3 cubic metres per hour.
Yes. The PX-180 is a legacy 65 Series device, but Energy Recovery still supplies complete units and spare parts for it. Units are built to order, so the lead time is confirmed on each quotation.
Energy Recovery identifies the complete PX-180 pressure exchanger as part number 40009-01. The part number and serial number are on the device nameplate.
From the nameplate. The three 65 Series models look similar and share older data sheets, so the part number and serial number on the nameplate are the reliable reference. Energy Recovery can confirm the model from the serial number.
The PX Q180 is the current Q Series device in the same flow class. Whether it can replace a PX-180 in an existing rack depends on connections, dimensions and operating flows, so it should be confirmed by Energy Recovery against the installed serial number.
